Y2K Vibes -Enloquéceme by OV7

In May 2000, a telenovela titled “Locura de Amor” first aired. The theme song, that opened the show was “Enloquéceme” by the music group, OV7.

Wait why does this song make me feel super nostalgic?

IDK if it’s the synths or the OHH AHHHHH OH AHHHHHAHHHHHA that makes me feel very nostalgic but it’s a Y2K gem that everyone should appreciate more.

Who is OV7?

OV7 is a music group based in Mexico formed in 1989 that’s still active today. I know what you’re thinking…they’ve been around for that long???

They have a pretty interesting and somewhat confusing concept so strap in bby.

OV7 is a rotating music group. So while the name stays the same, the members of the group come and go. Members debut in the group but later on decide to leave to pursue other musical interests. The group itself doesn’t break up though, they continue doing their thing and may add a new member in the process. This is similar to rotating groups like Timbiriche or The Mickey Mouse Club in the U.S.

What is Enloquéceme about?

It’s a good song for the summertime. Something for the girls to get ready to. But seriously, it is about dancing under the moonlight with your boo and being so in love with them that it makes you crazy. This song was the opening theme for “Locura de Amor.” I don’t remember watching this novela (I was like 4 when this novela first aired LOL) but I vividly remember hearing this song playing on TV and on the radio frequently. I looked up to see what the novela was about and a two-sentence summary on IMBD reveals how…questionable this series was. Would storylines like this exist in 2021? Probably.

Impact of Enloquéceme

This song went on to win a TVyNovelas award for best musical theme of the year. The novela itself paved the way for many other shows in the 2000s that catered to a younger generation of novela watchers. These novelas also had catchy, youthful soundtracks that captured the mood of the show.

As for OV7, they are known as one of the most successful groups in Latin America. They went on to crossover and make English songs and even had a song on the 2002 World Cup Soundtrack.

OV7 disbanded in 2003 but then reunited in 2010 with almost all of the original members from 1989. Their last album was in 2013 but continue to tour by performing all the classics.

Last Note

The TV theme is not dead and novelas are proof that theme songs still stand the test of time, even in a world of streaming and having the option to skip the intro.
