Sad Girl Hours - Inevitable by Shakira
In 1998, Shakira released her fourth studio album which had the song “Inevitable”
What is this song about?
The lyrics start out very mundane. Shakira starts listing things she can’t do by saying she can’t make coffee, she was unfaithful and doesn’t understand soccer (a big deal since she’s from Colombia AND married to a soccer player now). She then confesses to her ex-lover that she can’t stop thinking about them and that life is boring without them. During the chorus, she confesses that there’s no point in trying to forget them because loving them is “inevitable.”
FYI: Yes Inevitable is spelled the same in Spanish and yes it has the same meaning.
What Was the Inspiration for this Song?
Shakira has said that singing about the manifestations of love is…inevitable. The album “Dónde Están los Ladrones?” (Where are the thieves), talks about different aspects of love like believing in different things and constantly thinking about someone you love. But she also shares social commentary in a few other songs on the album too.
The album title has an interesting story too. Shakira was traveling one day when her luggage was stolen at the airport. This is when she had a realization about thieves.
A thief is not just a person who takes a physical object that doesn't belong to him or her. There are thieves who steal feelings, space, time, dreams, rights
