How This 80s Luis Miguel Song Became Trendy on TikTok - Ahora Te Puedes Marchar by Luis Miguel
In 1987, Luis Miguel released the song “Ahora Te Puedes Marchar”
If you’re like me, you have a TikTok and probably spend lots of time scrolling on it aimlessly. Well, one day, I see a TikTok pop-up and it used this Luis Miguel song. As an 80s music fanatic, I was vibing at maximum frequency and also surprised to hear this song on an app like TikTok. Here we have this song that sounds VERY 80s but transcends time, suddenly finds its way on the most downloaded app known for setting worldwide trends. Here is the TikTok that popped up on my FYP and it is one of the most popular videos on the app that has used this song. It currently has 1.5 million views on the app.
So Why is This Song ~ trendy ~ on TikTok All of a Sudden?
Some of the most popular trends on TikTok involve making a video that uses clothes and creating an aesthetic through fashion such as the Flip the Switch Trend or the Hot Seat trend.
Users take a part of a song (usually it’s the beat drop or change) and then create a fashion transformation in front of our very eyes.
The TikTok trend using the Luis Miguel song is a bit different in that there is no beat drop or change. Users create a dreamy 80s aesthetic through filters, makeup, fashion, and then lip-sync to the beginning of the song.
Some of the earliest uses of “Ahora Te Puedes Marchar” on TikTok were to create this 80s aesthetic. Many users referred to it as an alternative look and even welcomed other TikTok users to the “alt” or “indie” Hispanic side of TikTok if their video came across their feed.
As the song started trending, people were quick to correct others on the fact that this song isn’t “indie.”
When a song or audio clip becomes popular on TikTok, a lot of people will use that clip and may not jump on the trend or dance challenge it is originally being used for, instead, they use it for something else as an easy way to gain exposure on the platform. The more popular a song is on TikTok, the higher your chances of going viral are on the app if you use that song. Now when you look up “Ahora Te Puedes Marchar” on the app, you will see that users are not just using the song to jump on the original 80s aesthetic trend but for literally anything. The song has been used to create a variety of other TikToks such as memes, travel videos, cooking videos, and even as a way to share cleaning hacks!
Widespread usage of an audio clip is how songs become popular beyond TikTok (Shoutout to Lil Nas X).
With almost 10,000 uses of “Ahora Te Puedes Marchar” on TikTok and millions of views on the app, many people are revisiting this song in a very engaging way.
Last Note
While “Ahora Te Puedes Marchar” is experiencing a surge in popularity on TikTok at the moment, the indie Latinx or Hispanic side of TikTok is here to stay. I’m seeing lots of users currently using songs by other artists like Julieta Venegas and La Oreja de Van Gogh to carve out this very niche side of TikTok. I’m excited to hear what other songs become
~ trendy ~ as I embark my journey though indie Hispanic and Latinx TikTok!
